Recovering Energy Sources
Evaporation is an energy-intensive process widely used in many industrial sectors, such as food processing, pulp and paper, and the chemical industry. While significant improvements can be achieved through multi-effect systems and energy recovery, energy consumption remains high.
Shellex’s Solution
For this project, Shellex was involved in every phase, from study and engineering to construction, commissioning, and subsidy management. The project consisted of replacing an existing evaporator with a new unit using mechanical vapor recompression technology. This technology recovers the latent energy contained in the evaporated product, resulting in a significant reduction in energy and cooling water consumption.
This is one of the first installations of its kind in Quebec. Beyond the technological challenge, integrating the equipment into a new five-story building with very limited space in an existing environment was a remarkable achievement. The project was executed under an EPC approach, with Shellex serving as the main contractor.
Energy consumption was decreased by almost 90% compared to before the project was implemented.
