120 kV Substation

Powering New Equipment

Thanks to our Industrial Power Systems team, Shellex was able to contribute to the construction and commissioning of a new 120 kV substation. This substation supplies power to a new 50 MW electric boiler operating at 13.8 kV for one of our long-standing clients. Prior to this project, the plant was powered by Hydro-Québec’s 25 kV network. Following the installation of the substation and the load transfer, the plant is now supplied by the new substation. Shellex also ensured system redundancy by keeping the existing distribution network in place, allowing the plant to continue operating in the event of a failure at the new substation.

Logistical Challenges

The transformer was imported from Italy and transported by train to the client’s site. Additionally, the Shellex team adapted the substation to fit the limited available space. Another unique aspect of this new substation is that it was designed to be underground to meet urban constraints.
