To improve the reliability and energy efficiency of the facility’s steam production system, a 35,000 lb/h natural gas and No. 2 oil-fired steam boiler with a standard economizer was added to the existing steam plant. The project also involved removing an existing electric boiler, installing a new auxiliary stack, and integrating various Balance of Plant (BOP) systems associated with steam production.
The project presented several technical challenges. The boiler and economizer had to be installed below ground level in a highly confined area, requiring a carefully engineered installation strategy. In addition, the work needed to be completed while maintaining steam service to end users, with minimal interruptions.
Shellex performed an energy study and an atmospheric contaminant dispersion analysis (including stack testing) to support equipment pre-purchase, detailed engineering, on-site services, and grant applications. This $2,000,000 investment now generates annual energy savings of 13,545 gigajoules (approximately $167,400) and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 876 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.
