Working with limited space
To enhance the reliability and energy efficiency of the steam production system, a 35,000 lb/h natural gas and No. 2 oil-fired steam boiler, along with a standard economizer, has been installed in the existing steam plant. The project also included the dismantling of an existing electric boiler, the installation of a new auxiliary stack, and the integration of specific Balance of Plant (BOP) systems related to steam production.
The project presented a number of unique characteristics and challenges. The installation of the boiler and economizer had to be carried out below ground level and within a very confined space, which required a complex equipment installation methodology. The work was executed while minimizing steam supply interruptions to end users.
Shellex conducted an energy study and an atmospheric contaminant dispersion analysis (via stack testing) to facilitate the pre-purchase of equipment, detailed engineering, site services, and grant applications. This $2,000,000 investment resulted in annual energy savings of 13,545 gigajoules (equivalent to $167,400) and a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 876 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
